The Castleconnell Infopedia

Castleconnell Infopedia is an online Living Encyclopedia designed to capture and preserve information about our community in one place. It will gather together personal stories, local history and heritage, cultural events, the natural habitat and community achievements all relating to our village. Castleconnell has much to be proud of.

Castleconnell is a scenic village bordering the River Shannon in County Limerick. It takes its name from the Irish name for the castle built by the Gunning clan in 1000AD - Caislean Ui gConaing or Gunnings Castle.

For Centuries...

the river has played a major role in the lives of those living here. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the gentry built grand estates bordering the majestic river, the world famous salmon fishery and eel weirs provided local employment and the healing waters of the chalybeate spa attracted visitors from Munster and further afield.

Castleconnell today has retained its’ charm and the river still plays a role in the life of the village, enjoyed by visitors and locals for its scenic beauty, nature walks and wildlife and water sports.
